Alp A German vampirelike spirit associated with the bogeyman and the incubus, normally tormenting the nights and dreams of women, although men and children are also victims. Connected with the nightmare, the alp is considered a male, sometimes the spirit of a recently deceased person, most often an demon.
The spirit can fly like a bird, can ride a horse and has a certain gallant attitude so it rarely has to force itself on its prey. Entry is made through the victim's mouth, either using its tongue, becoming a mist that enters or turning into a snake.
The alp drinks blood from the nipples of men an children but especially enjoys the taste of women's milk at that of cows.
Because it is so involved in terrors of the mind and sleep, the alp is virtually impossible to destroy. There are however ways for protecion. Women are told to sleep with their shoes at the side if their beds, with the toes pointing toward the door.
The alp must protect its eye, for in that orb resides its means to torment the sleep of a victim, an attribute steeped in the traditions of the "evil eye".

The aluga is probably the same as the arabian algul, but is considered by some sources to be a blood demon, possibly even the demon king of the vampires.

Asanbosam This vampire (male or female or small) is found in Africa in the areas of the Ivory Coast and Toga. The asanbosam is believed to reside in deep forests, most often encountered there by hunters.

Aswang This vampire of the Philippines is believed always to be a female of real beuty by day and a fearsome flying fiend by night. The aswang lives in a house, can marry and have children and seems a normal human during the daytime. (daylight hours)
At night the creature is led to the houses of its victims by night birds. It feeds on blood, by sticking its long, hollow, thin tongue through the cracks in the roofs of its preys houses. It feeds especially on children.
The aswang can be recognized by its swollen appearance after feasting, so much that it looks pregnant.
If the aswang licks someones shadow, that person will die soon after and its held to be very unlucky to see the aswang under the house. Garlic rubbed under the armpit keeps the aswang away (and not only the aswang! red.)
